Paint questions, answered

Which Frenchic paint should I use?
  • Walls and ceilings: Chalk Wall Paint (ultra matte).
  • Kitchen cupboards: Al Fresco is our first choice. The Lazy Range and Trim Paint work well too.
  • Furniture like dressers, sideboards and bedside tables: any of our ranges work, but the Lazy Range and Al Fresco are the ones we use most.
  • Doors, skirting and window frames: Trim Paint (semi-sheen), made for woodwork. The Lazy Range and Al Fresco also work, on wood, metal and PVC.
  • Panelling: Al Fresco.
  • Outside (front doors, garden furniture and more): Al Fresco, the only range made for outdoors.
  • A chalky, vintage look: Original Artisan, sealed with wax, Tuff Top Coat or Finishing Coat.
Can I paint my kitchen cupboards?

Yes, with any of our ranges. Al Fresco is our first choice. Like the Lazy Range, it’s self-priming and self-sealing, so there’s no primer or sealer to buy. For very busy kitchens you can add extra protection with Finishing Coat (sheen) or Tuff Top Coat (matte).

Trim Paint also suits cupboards, with a semi-sheen finish. You can even use Chalk Wall Paint, sealed with Finishing Coat, Tuff Top Coat or wax.

How close are the colours on screen to the real paint?

Close, but not exact. Every screen shows colour a little differently, and the light in your room changes how paint looks through the day. Use the visualiser to narrow down your choice, then order a peel-and-stick sample:

  • Move it around the room.
  • Look at it in the morning and the evening.
  • Order a few to compare side by side.

The Frenchic colour chart shows the full range at a glance.

How do I prepare the surface?

Prep is the step people skip most, and it makes the biggest difference:

  • Clean and degrease with sugar soap.
  • Give it a light sand or scuff.
  • Wipe away all the dust.

That’s all you need, even on shiny surfaces like laminate, melamine, gloss paint and varnish.

Do I need a primer or a sealer?

You never need a primer with Frenchic. Al Fresco and the Lazy Range seal themselves too, but on very busy surfaces you can add Finishing Coat (sheen) or Tuff Top Coat (matte) for extra protection.

  • Original Artisan always needs sealing, with wax, Tuff Top Coat or Finishing Coat.
  • Chalk Wall Paint needs sealing when it’s used on furniture, cupboards, doors or floors.
How many coats, and how long does it take to dry?

Plan for two coats. Each coat dries in 1–2 hours, so you can do both in a day.

All paint, not just Frenchic, takes up to 3 weeks to cure and reach full strength, so treat it gently until then. Once cured, Chalk Wall Paint is fully scrubbable.

How much paint will I need?
  • Chalk Wall Paint: about 12–14 m² per litre for each coat. A 2.5L tin covers 30–35 m² with one coat, so about 15–17 m² with two.
  • Lazy Range and Al Fresco: a 750ml tin covers about 9 m², enough for a dresser with two coats. A small kitchen might need two tins, depending on whether you paint just the fronts of the doors or the backs too.

Not sure? Send Johnny your measurements with the form on this page and he’ll tell you how many tins to get.

Which brush should I use?
  • Furniture and cupboards: a Frenchic Oval brush. They’re boar’s hair, so they cut down on brush marks for a sprayed-door finish. Use the Petite for details, the Small for drawers and frames, and the Medium for doors and tops.
  • Doors and woodwork: the Oval or the flat brushes.
  • Walls and ceilings: a roller, with a brush for the edges.

For a smooth finish, use thin coats, long strokes with the grain, and don’t overwork it. Wash brushes thoroughly in hot soapy water.

I’m painting a light colour over dark wood. Any tips?

Pine and dark units can show through light colours like white, which have the least pigment. Paint one coat of a light grey like Swanky Pants first, then your colour on top, and you’ll need fewer coats. Two coats is normally enough, but light over dark can take more.

What else can Chalk Wall Paint be used on?

As well as walls and ceilings, it can go on panelling, doors and woodwork, furniture, kitchen cupboards, radiators and even floors. Seal furniture, cupboards and doors with Finishing Coat, Tuff Top Coat or wax. Floors must be sealed with Tuff Top Coat or Finishing Coat, as they get so much wear. On radiators, sealing is optional.

Can I paint my PVC windows?

Yes, inside and out, and there’s no primer needed. Prep them the usual way: clean with sugar soap, give them a light sand, and wipe away the dust.

  • Outside: Al Fresco.
  • Inside: the Lazy Range, Chalk Wall Paint or Al Fresco.
Can I paint tiles?

Yes, with Al Fresco. Prep them the usual way: clean with sugar soap, give them a light sand, and wipe away the dust.
